metadata.dc.description.resumo: The gillnet fishery is a passive gear used to catch fish and crustacean species. Among the industrial fleet within the State of Santa Catarina which applies this technique, the main target-species are demersal fishes such as monkfish, whitemouth croaker and argentine croaker. The current work presents a study focused on the dynamic, economical and technological aspects of the different gillnet fisheries on the 2000 decade providing substantial information for the development of a management plan of that activity. The analyzed data were provided by the Industrial Fisheries Statistics Program of Santa Catarina for years 2001 to 2008. These data included production reports, log books and questionnaires totalizing 7.021 fishing trips, and information collected during both Scientific and Boarding Observer Programs for the studied fleet. The distinct fisheries were identified through cluster and MDS analysis. Their respective target-species and incidental catch were identified using the methodology developed by Biseau. Only then the total captures and effort were distributed at a statistical grid of 30 x30 of resolution. From the results the technological specifications of the net could be reproduced. A total of 5 distinct gillnet fisheries were conducted by 1 foreign and 4 national fleets. The former captured monkfish (Lophius gastrophysus) and operated mostly on the offshore continental shelf and slope. The national fleet concentrated effort in fishing whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) on the inner continental shelf using mesh sizes of 130 mm. Its economical viability was found to be positive. Also, the argentine croaker (Umbrina canosai) fishery was classified as second in number of vessels and fish trips and occurred on both offshore and shallow continental shelf using mesh sizes of 100 mm. The fisheries on the slope captured mainly monkfish and gulf-hake (Urophysis mystacea). The monkfish fishery was adapted to match the foreign fleet specifications using 280 mm of mesh size. Its economical viability was found to be positive. The gulf-hake fishery used 110 mm of mesh size and also had positive economical viability. In spite of the relevance and differences between the various industrial gillnet fisheries existent in the State of Santa Catarina, there are no specific legislation separating them, as well as, an unclear distinction between driftnet and gillnet operations
